Weight Loss- Is Willpower Enough?

At the Weight Loss Institute of New Jersey, we want to help you get fit and maintain a healthy weight. We are always looking for new information to share with individuals who are interested in living a healthier lifestyle.

We all have the best intentions, however; many of us still cannot attain or even maintain a healthy body weight. Further, this is especially difficult during the holiday season. Recently, many experts have shed light on why we eat more than we think we do and that shear willpower may have nothing to do with weight loss.

Brian Wansick, author of Mindless Eating tells us that certain factors cause us to eat certain foods as well as eat more that we think we do.

Food Presentation- how a food is presented is a big indicator on how we rate the quality of our food. For example, people who were served the same brownie on a napkin and on a fancy Wedgewood plate, report the brownie on the fancy plate of higher quality.

A “tasty” name- the names that we give food is directly related to what people choose to eat.  “Succulent Tuscany pasta” sells better than plain “Italian pasta”

Mimic tendencies- It has been shown that people who are eating with a friend who eats fast, they will eat fast as well. Even in a buffet line, we mimic the amount of food the person in front of us is putting on their plate.

Fullness- even if we are full, it has been shown that we will continue to eat as long as food is presented to us.  For example, one study showed that people ate 73% more from a refillable soup bowl.

Portioned snacks- we all love those 100-calories snack packs—it takes all the guessing out of measuring portions.  But did you know that about 30% of people will end up eating the same amount or even more than they normally would if they were portioning the food out themselves?

Perhaps there are many factors that we are not consciously aware of that may be causing us to overeat—even if we feel like we have strong willpower NOT to overeat.
